Size is double oban!
THIS PRINT IS AN ORIGINAL WOODBLOCK - NOT A REPRODUCTION OF A WOODBLOCK. THE ARTIST, KAORU KAWANO, 1916-1965, IS NOTED FOR HIS DECEPTIVELY SIMPLE PORTRAYALS OF HUMAN, FLORAL AND ANIMAL FORMS. THEY TYPICALLY FEATURE CONTRASTY COLORING AND WOODGRAIN EFFECTS FROM SPECIALLY VENEERED BLOCKS TO ENHANCE THE VISUAL IMAGE. THIS PRINT IS LARGER THAN THE USUAL OBAN - THE IMAGE SIZE BEING 9 1/4" x 14 3 /4". THE PRINT IS NUMBERED 28/100, TITLED "SMALL BIRDS" (IN JAPANESE AND ENGLISH) AND IS SIGNED "KAORU KAWANO", ALL IN PENCIL. KAWANO'S SEAL IN RED ALSO APPEARS IN THE PICTURE AREA. ON THE BACK IS GLUED, AND SECURITY STAMPED, A NOTE ATTESTING TO KAWANO'S DOING THE CARVING OF THE BLOCKS AND THE PRINTING HIMSELF. THE PRINT IS CLEAR AND UNFADED AND HAS GOOD BLEEDTHROUGH. THERE ARE SOME FAINT WRINKLES IN THE MARGINS (NOT IN THE PRINTED AREA) BUT THEY MAY HAVE RESULTED FROM THE PRINTING PROCESS ITSELF.

| Artist Bio: |
Kaoru Kawano was a very popular artist, known for his distinctively styled depictions of figures, especially children. He uses the woodgrain patterns to render the textures and the mood to his works. Double-oban-sized prints are almost always limited-edition lifetime strikes that are pencil-signed, editioned, and titled by Kawano himself. There are rare later editions that have stencilled titles, which I believe are posthumous strikes. Large-oban-sized scenes with a pencil-signed signature (usually within the printed area) will be lifetime editions signed by the artist, while unsigned prints with a black round seal on the verso will be posthumous strikes.
