THIS LARGER SIZE JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT IS ENTITLED "EVENING SNOW AT KIYAMACHI" BY KOTOZUKA EIICHI (1906-79). LOVELY SNOW COVERS STREET SCENE. NICE SHADING & LIGHTLY EMBOSSED AREAS OF SNOW. IMAGE 10 3/4"X 15 1/2". PAPER 11 5/8"X 17 1/2". THERE IS A NOTCH IN ONE CORNER & WHAT LOOKS TO BE A SYMBOL. PROBABLY HAS TO DO WITH PUBLISHER. MY GUESS ON VINTAGE IS 1950S TO EARLY 1960S. IT WAS ATTACHED TO A MATTE & I JUST LEFT IT. IT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH NO TEARS, CREASES OR REPAIRS. PAPER IS YELLOWED SLIGHTLY. NO AREAS OF FOXING, NO STAINS. PAPER IS STRONG & NOT BRITTLE.

Artist Bio: KOTOZUKA, EIICHI was born in Osaka in 1906. He studied at the Kyoto Specialist School of Painting and in the late 1940s was one of the four artists who founded a co-operative publishing company called Koryokusha in an effort to gain an artistic expression free of the major houses. Tokuriki, Tobei and Tasaburo were the other three involved. He has created quite a number of woodblocks covering unique scenes of Japanese tradition, flowers, landscapes and wildlife. He was a member of the Seiryusha Group of Liberal Artists and Died in 1979.
