This is one of Kaoru Kawano's (1916-1965) strongest compositions. It shows a young mother with a baby wrapped in her robe. The striking creamy white of the mother's face directs the design with elegant simplicity. The print is signed in pencil in the image below the figure and the artists stamp is to the right of the figure. The print measures 14 7/8" x 10".

Kaoru Kawano was a very popular artist, known for his distinctively styled depictions of figures, especially children. He uses the woodgrain patterns to render the textures and the mood to his works.
Double-oban-sized prints are almost always limited-edition lifetime strikes that are pencil-signed, editioned, and titled by Kawano himself. There are rare later editions that have stencilled titles, which I believe are posthumous strikes.
Large-oban-sized scenes with a pencil-signed signature (usually within the printed area) will be lifetime editions signed by the artist, while unsigned prints with a black round seal on the verso will be posthumous strikes.
