Kamakura Daibutsu

This classic shin-hanga image of the Great Buddha at Kamakura is considered Okuyama Gihachiro’s best print. The colors are wonderful, the design a classic image of this famous site.

First Edition- This print is a first edition printing of the Kamakura Daibutsu image published by Kyoto hanga In. It dates to 1950.

Signed- Gihachiro with red artist’s seal- Okuyama
Sealed- Publisher Kyoto hanga In, 1st Edition
Image size- 10 ½” x 15 3/8” (oban tate-e)
Condition- Good, no toning, small paper remnants on back from previous framing.

Artist Bio: 

◆奥山儀八郎 (おくやま-ぎはちろう)1907年~1981年 版画家   明治40年 2月山形県寒河江市に生まれる。   昭和03年 第8回日本創作版画協会展に初入選。   昭和04年 「儀八・丸の内風景個人展」(日本毛織ショールーム内・NIKKE画廊)。   昭和06年 河野鷹思、山名文夫らと東京広告美術協会を結成する。   昭和08年 日本珈琲飲用史の研究に着手。   昭和09年 広告版画個展(銀座・伊東屋)。   昭和11年 浮世絵研究で名高い石井研堂に私淑。   昭和16年 彫師・摺師との協同作業による伝統的木版画制作を開始。   昭和20年~昭和27年、日本版画研究所で浮世絵の復刻事業を行なう。   昭和29年 松戸市下矢切に自宅を構え工房を開設。   昭和40年 伊藤左千夫の小説『野菊の墓』の文学碑建設(松戸市)のため尽力。   昭和56年 10月、没(享年74)。
