Naniwa Hyakkei: Kitano Taiyuji, "One Hundred Views of Osaka: The Kitano Taiyu Temple", A Genuine Woodblock Print by Utagawa Kunikazu, Printed c. 1860s
Description:
The majority of the prints produced in Osaka are actor prints, yet there are a small number of woodblock print landscapes, mostly influenced by the work of Hiroshige. The present print is clearly after Hiroshige's 100 Views of Edo series of 1858, in its format of 100 scenes, and especially in its design, with a closeup element in the foreground through which the scene in the distance is viewed. We look past the red Torii gate of the temple here to the pines and people of the temple grounds. The main hall appears at the end of the gravel walkway. The print measures 9.5 x 7 (chuban sized), and is in excellent condition, no flaws noted.
