Subject: This series of portraits capitalizes on the success of the half-length 'Actors on the Tokaido' series. Once again actors are shown against landscapes, this time with foreground and background separated by a cloud device. The Thirty-six immortal poets were the outstanding Japanese poets from the time of the Manyoshu anthology to the end of the 10th century. One of Kunisada's best printed sets of bust portraits.

Condition: Very fine colors. A printer's crease mark at centre. Very minor marks and flaws. Generally very fine state of preservation.
Impression: Superb impression with gauffrage, a lacquer pattern on the black and pink areas of the kimono and strong woodgrain visible in the background. Printed on high quality deluxe paper. |
