Japanese Woodblock by Eiichi Kotozuka ‘Lake Biwa’ (c1950)

A beautiful snowy harbor scene by Eiichi Kotozuka (1906-??) titled “Lake Biwa” (in Japanese, “Biwako”) and dating to the 1940’s or 50’s. Bears artist’s black Japanese “signature” and “seal” in lower left corner. Print is published by Uchida Bijutsu Shoshi. Circa 1940’s/50’s.

Print is in overall quite good condition, but does have some minor discoloration seen in extreme upper right corner and to margins. Wonderfully executed “bokashi” (gradation of color) shading to the sky’s and water’s colors. Print is “dai-ban” (large oban), the image itself measures 10 ½ x 15 inches.

Artist Bio: KOTOZUKA, EIICHI was born in Osaka in 1906. He studied at the Kyoto Specialist School of Painting and in the late 1940s was one of the four artists who founded a co-operative publishing company called Koryokusha in an effort to gain an artistic expression free of the major houses. Tokuriki, Tobei and Tasaburo were the other three involved. He has created quite a number of woodblocks covering unique scenes of Japanese tradition, flowers, landscapes and wildlife. He was a member of the Seiryusha Group of Liberal Artists and Died in 1979.
