Here is an interesting note from a Hasui collector about Sakai & Kawaguchi later editions from post-war recarved blocks:
As you will know, Hasui published 16 prints with the publisher Kawaguchi. Recent prints of some of these can still be ordered via the publisher Watanabe (Watanabe buys them from the successor of Kawaguchi ) I saw that these modern prints deviate in detail from the original prints. Watanabe told me in a mail that all the woodblocks at Kawaguchi have been destroyed at a certain moment (cause unknown) and that during the lifetime of Hasui new blocks were carved. Watanabe writes :
"HKS prints are made by the other publisher not by S. Watanabe. In 1930’s, Mr. Sakai and Mr. Kawaguchi made 15 design by Kawase Hasui. And these original woodblocks were lost. We don't know the reason at all.
After 1945, during Hasui's lifetime, new woodblocks were made for these designs again . Hasui made block copies for them again. So I recognize them as the second original woodblocks. HKS prints I sell now are the late printings from second original woodblocks. And as they are made by the other publisher, they have no (Heisei) Watanabe seals.” |

The following information was taken from the original web listing of this artwork. Note that there may be some inaccuracies:
Snowy Miyajima, 1929 Kawase Hasui (1883 – 1957)
Snowy Miyajima
The famous red torri at Miyajima in the water during a snowfall. The colors are brilliantly combined with the bright red torri standing in contrast to the shimmering blue water and white snow. Hasui’s design of the torri reflection in the water is a classic touch. This great print evokes the beauty of some of Japan’s famous sites and offers the viewer a sense of the awe inspiring places in Japan.
