Great Tokaido Series: # 50 Tsuchiyama

Artist: Hiroshige I
Format: Oban yoko-e: 9.5" x 14.5"

Subject: The head of a Daimyo's procession crossing a torrent by a bridge towards the village, hidden in a grove of trees, under a heavy downpour of rain. One of Hiroshige's finest rain scenes.

Publisher: Hoeido

Date: 1834

Tsuchiyama is a rest stop along the road from Kyoto to Edo, just before you reach the Suzushika pass. The ranks of an official's entourage keep trudging along in the rain, without even glancing up at their destination, the village nestled behind the trees. The river is in full spate, flowing furiously down its course. The viewer is reminded forcefully of these incidental aspects of rain.
