Number 21. Itsukushima Moon. Printed 1886. Engraver: Enkatsu. Seal: Taiso. Itsukushima (Miyajima) is an island southwest of Hiroshima. A festival was held there annually. The courtesan in the boat is pulling up to the torii of the main shrine at Itsukshima. In the boat are her umbrella, a travelling hat with a heavy veil and a drum. The drum indicates that she will participate in the dances that were part of the annual ceremony. Printed on the full sheet. Top margin slightly toned from glue. Some color fading in the umbrella, and the pinks in the robe and the cartouche. |
