Inume Pass, from the series "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji", by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

A great many of the works from Hiroshige's later years were created on a vertically arranged format. This print shows a deep valley, distant, hazy mountains, with a snow-topped Mt. Fuji rising in the background. This vertical layering of elements is perfectly suited to his vertical format. Hiroshige has also created an ingenious combination of reds, greens, yellows, and blues in this autumn scene.
