Ichimuraza Theater , by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)
This print shows the booming popularity of the theaters during the Edo period. Just like Disneyland and other amusement parks today, they were filled with people having fun. This triptych is a horizontal arrangement of three half-sheet prints. This effective use of the triptych format with its overall image running across the side margins of each individual print provides a splendid image of the mood of the impressive Ichimuraza Theater. |
