Shokintei in Yushima, from the series "Restaurants in Edo", by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

One of a series of thirty prints showing the famous restaurants of Edo, this print shows a view out over the town of Edo from the second story rooms at the Shokintei restaurant in Yushima. It seems that some sort of poetry meeting is taking place. It is hard to imagine this scene today, with Tokyo now a forest of high-rise buildings, but until very recently the Tokyo landscape did include these fields of low-lying buildings and houses.
