Actor Paper Dolls, Ichikawa Yaozo II , by Katsushika Hokusai 1760-1849)
This is a doll of the popular kabuki actor Ichikawa Yaozo II provided with changes of costume. The title in Japanese refers to the seven transformations of Yaozo, and as it suggests, seven costumes are provided for Yaozo. Ukiyo-e prints were not just for visual enjoyment, some prints provided these other kinds of enjoyment. The signature Shunro is one of the names Hokusai used when he was a young man. This print shows that he was already extremely talented as a young man. |
