Mt. Dokan , by Shotei Hokuju (Active. early 19th century)

Hokusai actively took on western style methods of depiction and his followers continued this practice. This work was created by Hokuju, one of Hokusai's followers. The human figures get gradually smaller as they recede into the picture plane, revealing Hokuju's studies of western perspective methods. Conversely, the surfaces of the fields and the hillside have been created out of a mosaic-like effect of color squares. This too was somehow drawn from western methods of shading, and Hokusai's followers were fascinated by the expressive effects of shading, often using them as a form of pattern rather than in their standard use of defining form.
