Otano, from the series Stripes, Checks and Women, by Utagawa Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

The checked pattern in the background was known as a benkeishima pattern in Japan. Checked patterns were one of the most elegant patterns used in the Edo period, and as can be seen from the number of names used for checked patterns, a whole range of checked types existed. But, it was a pattern that was very hard to wear well. This is one print from a series showing women wearing some form of clothing with a checked pattern
