Mandarin Ducks in the Snow, by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)
A pair of mandarin ducks swim along on a watery surface as the snow falls. The human-like character to the ducks naturally draws the viewer into the picture plane. Hiroshige was not only a creator of landscape prints, he was also especially skilled at prints of birds and flowers. This is one of Hiroshige's masterpieces. The poem brushed in the sky says, oshidorino/sakazuki toji yo/usu___.
