The following information was taken from the original web listing of this artwork. Note that there may be some inaccuracies:

Iwai Hanshiro, by Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825)
The actor Iwai Hanshiro is shown on stage in a scene where snow is falling. Fat, wet snowflakes fall against an ashy gray background. There has already been quite a snowfall, as seen by the drifts around the actor's feet. The gray and white background sets off the actor's kimono, providing an excellent example of the heightened brilliance of color when set against a monochrome background.
