Beauty in Indigo Blue, by Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1864)

Cloaked in a black hood, this woman dressed in a monochrome indigo blue kimono is seen walking in the snow. The cloudy sky behind her and the white of the snow drifts contrast with the indigo. The pigment indigo had always been used in ukiyo-e prints, but its cool tones became especially popular at the end of the Edo period, and it was used in a variety of settings.
