Old Japanese Woodblock Ukiyo-e Print by Kawase Hasui
"Kinosaki in Tajima"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recently, I was at a home and found an old portfolio of Japanese woodblock prints that had been shipped to the United States in 1928, the customs form was with it and described the contents as "paper prints".

I will be selling a few here at auction.

This woodblock I think dates to 1924 or earlier and is titled "Kinosaki in Tajima" or it is also known as "Shirozaki, Tajima". It is a dramatic evening view showing the water next to a walkway with a few people on the street. The background are large ominous mountains. This print is in very good condition with only some slight yellowing to the outside border, mostly along the top. In some of the closeup photos of the printing on the border it looks as if it is yellow towards the bottom of each photo, this is not the case, it's only the lighting.

It is from the:

Tabimiyage III Souveniers of Travels, Third Series.

It bears the seal of the publisher "Watanabe"

Format - Oban 15 1/8" x 10 1/4"

Please note the small size of the publishers mark. It appears to be 6mm.
