Beautiful snow scene of Ukimido Temple in the water at lake Biwa. Incredible image in tones of blue with the white snow falling at night-time. A single lantern shines from the temple and glows a yellow/orange. Wonderful composition, a truly spectacular 20th century print and considered by some to be Koitsu’s finest work.

Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949)
Old, 1950’s Watanabe 6mm printTonight’s collection of 17 old shin-hanga prints- We purchased this collection of 17 shin-hanga prints from the estate of a collector in the Midwest. The collector purchased the prints in 1956 in Japan. He kept them as part of his Asian art collection until his death in the mid 1990’s. We purchased the entire group from his son. There are 14 Hasui prints, one Koitsu and two Shoson. The entire group is being offered in tonight’s auctions.

The 6mm Watanabe seal attesting to their age- The prints are all sealed with the 6mm Watanabe seal, sometimes referred to as the “J” seal, which was used from 1946-1957. Additionally, as was the practice with these prints, most of the pieces have two small pinholes in the margin used to hang and dry the piece after printing. All 17 prints are the high quality, early impressions expected in these 1950’s releases. They are all in excellent condition. Any condition issues are mentioned in the condition section of the description.

Offered once only- These 6mm early releases are a rare find and highly sought after by many collectors. If you are looking for early examples of Hasui, Shoson, or Koitsu, this large group is a rare opportunity for you to collect these prints at a very low opening bid price. They will be offered one time only and all auctions end on the 30th of August. We have a standing offer on each print, at the opening bid price, from a Japanese dealer. Any prints that remain, following the end of the auctions on the 30th, will be sold to that dealer at opening bid price. So, bid now if you are interested, we will not offer them again.

Ukimido Temple in Snow, Katada, Lake Biwa

Notes on this print- A beautiful old Koitsu print showing the tiny temple at night with the snow falling. A single lantern glows from the dockside of the temple. The print predominately in blues with lovely color and fine detail. A wonderful shin-hanga subject, the lonely scene at night lit by the glow of the lantern, great example of Koitsu’s work.

Signed- Koitsu with red artist’s seal
Sealed- Publisher Watanabe, 6mm seal, from the 1950’s
Image size- 9 ½” x 14 1/4” (oban tate-e)
Condition- Excellent, no toning, tears, not mounted, full margins.
